WCCO Interviews Best-Selling Author Who Battled Cancer ? CBS ...

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) ? Writing a bestselling novel is tough enough, so just imagine doing it under deadline while battling cancer.

WCCO?s Frank Vascellaro had the opportunity to talk to Vince Flynn, who just finished his thirteenth novel while being treated for prostate cancer.

Flynn is tough and disciplined. The former college football player was raised in a family with a firm belief that hard work yields results.

It has. He?s written 13 novels with 11 of them making it to the bestseller list.

The latest is ?Kill Shot?, just released this month and already at Number 1-(2) on the New York Times list.

?It was probably ? without a doubt ? the most difficult of the 13 that I?ve had to write,? said Flynn.

Difficult, indeed, because Flynn was battling stage 3 metastatic prostate cancer while he wrote the book.

In fact, when WCCO first profiled him a few years ago, it?s possible the disease was gaining a foothold inside him.

?I was in pain writing the last 2 books, but I didn?t know how serious it was,? said Flynn.

He went to doctors who thought he may have had a bacterial infection in his prostate, or it could just be a hazard of sitting and writing for up to 10 hours a day. But by November of 2010, Vince couldn?t sit for even an hour or two.

?I couldn?t sit down and focus it was just too painful,? said Flynn. ?I didn?t have the energy and I wasn?t sleeping well.?

After getting the proper diagnosis he began aggressive, cutting-edge treatments and set out to finish his novel.

?To a large degree I bought into this idea that if I?m gonna beat cancer I have to keep my life as normal as possible I have to get back to work you can?t go to bed and let the day go by,? said Flynn.

Standing Up To Cancer

Flynn was just 44-years-old at the time he received the stunning diagnosis: stage 3 metastatic prostate cancer.

?This is not your garden variety prostate cancer,? Flynn said. ?This is the aggressive kind that takes guys down.?

Flynn said that when he was first diagnosed, he wasn?t sure he?d make it to Christmas.

Like researching a novel, Flynn dug for information on doctors and discovered those using cutting-edge medicine.

The first step was hormone therapy, which comes with major side effects. The hormones make you gain weight, suffer hot flashes and cause irritability.

?You practically lose your mind,? Flynn said. ?Things can set you off. Now?with a lot of focus and prayer, I have been able to get a hold of it and not lose my temper the way I was losing my temper a year and-a-half ago. It was bad for couple of months.?

But he persevered because of his roots.

Growing up in a large and boisterous Irish Catholic family, having a stern father and an education from St. Thomas Academy High School gave him the will to keep fighting.

?If I didn?t have the strong faith that my parents gave to me and the schools that I went to and these coaches that were on us to always be striving to get better and to play with class and to never quit, I think there is a darn good chance?I would have just folded,? Flynn said.

During his struggle, Flynn also changed his diet.

He says he ate ?tons of vegetables, fruit and yogurt.? He also ate organic meat, but no red meat. No steak.

When asked when he last had a steak, Flynn replied: ?Over a year ago.?

Exercise accompanied his diet. Flynn does a cardio workout six days a week and lifts weights three days a week. It might not have been such a struggle if the cancer was discovered sooner.

?They think that I had the disease probably two-three years before I was diagnosed,? he said.

Flynn?s Advice

Flynn tells all his friends, even those in high places, to get tested for prostate cancer.

?If the disease is in your family history, you?d better go in at 40 and get a baseline PSA. And you?re going to have to argue with your insurance company and maybe even with your doctor. You just have to demand it and keep going after it until someone gives you that diagnosis.?

His other message for men with prostate cancer is: stay positive. Never surrender, Flynn says, and find the professionals that can help you beat the disease.

Flynn dedicated ?Kill Shot? to the doctors aggressively treating prostate cancer ? a disease that just a few years ago was death sentence.

?We?ve got the disease on the run right now,? Flynn said. ?Three news drugs were approved last year, five more were approved this year. My outlook is good.?

Flynn says his doctor thinks he?ll live to be an old guy.

In addition to being the favorite for best picture, "The Artist" is projected to be in the spotlight for best director (Michel Hazanavicius) and best actor (Jean Dujardin). Viola Davis, who played a leading role in "The Help," has the highest-valued shares in the best-actress market. Christopher Plummer ("Beginners") and Octavia Spencer ("The Help") are favored for best supporting actor and actress, respectively.

These are the clear verdicts from the Hollywood Stock Exchange and Intrade, two of the prediction markets catering to Oscar picks.

A genetic analysis reveals the ancient, complex--and symbiotic--roots of photosynthesis in plants

Earth is the planet of the plants?and it all can be traced back to one green cell. The world's lush profusion of photosynthesizers?from towering redwoods to ubiquitous diatoms?owe their existence to a tiny alga eons ago that swallowed a cyanobacteria and turned it into an internal solar power plant.

By studying the genetics of a glaucophyte?one of a group of just 13 unique microscopic freshwater blue-green algae, sometimes called "living fossils"?an international consortium of scientists led by molecular bioscientist Dana Price of Rutgers University, has elucidated the evolutionary history of plants. The glaucophyte Cyanophora paradoxa still retains a less domesticated version of this original cyanobacteria than most other plants.

According to the analysis of C. paradoxa's genome of roughly 70 million base pairs, this capture must have occurred only once because most modern plants share the genes that make the merger of photosynthesizer and larger host cell possible. That union required cooperation not just from the original host and the formerly free-ranging photosynthesizer but also, apparently, from a bacterial parasite. Chlamydia-like cells, such as Legionella (which includes the species that causes Legionnaire's disease), provided the genes that enable the ferrying of food from domesticated cyanobacteria, now known as plastids, or chloroplasts, to the host cell.

"These three entities forged the nascent organelle, and the process was aided by multiple horizontal gene transfers as well from other bacteria," explains biologist Debashish Bhattacharya of Rutgers University, whose lab led the work published in Science on February 17. "Gene recruitment [was] likely ongoing" before the new way of life prospered and the hardened cell walls of most plants came into being.

In fact, such a confluence of events is so rare that evolutionary biologists have found only one other example: the photosynthetic amoeba Paulinella domesticated cyanobacteria roughly 60 million years ago. "The amoeba plastid is still a 'work in progress' in evolutionary terms," Bhattacharya notes. "We are now analyzing the genome sequence from Paulinella to gain some answers" as to how these events occur.

The work provides the strongest support yet for the hypothesis of late biologist Lynn Margulis, who first proposed in the 1960s to widespread criticism the theory that all modern plant cells derived from such a symbiotic union, notes biologist Frederick Spiegel of the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, who was not involved in the work. That thinking suggests that all plants are actually chimeras?hybrid creatures cobbled together from the genetic bits of this ancestral union, including the enabling parasitic bacteria.

The remaining question is why this complex union took place roughly 1.6 billion years ago. One suggestion is that local conditions may have made it more beneficial for predators of cyanobacteria to stop eating and start absorbing, due to a scarcity of prey and an abundance of sunlight. "When the food runs out but sunlight is abundant, then photosynthesis works better" to support an organism, Bhattacharya notes. And from that forced union a supergroup of extremely successful organisms?the plants?sprang.

Wall Street falls after retail sales data disappoints (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? The S&P 500 index retreated on Tuesday from near a seven-month high after weaker-than-expected January U.S. retail sales data curbed investors' appetite for risky assets.

Leading the fall was the financial sector, with two of the top three biggest decliners on the Dow Bank of America and JPMorgan Chase & Co (JPM.N).

Citigroup downgraded Bank of America Corp (BAC.N) to "neutral" from "buy," saying earnings headwinds would continue at the company even as capital concerns subside. Bank of America shares were down 1.1 percent at $8.16 and JPMorgan shares fell 1.5 percent to $37.70.

The 0.4 percent rise in retail sales fell short of the 0.7 percent increase expected by economists polled by Reuters and reflected cutbacks in car purchases and online shopping.

"The data shows that consumers are still hanging in there, just not as strong as we expected," said Scott Brown, chief economist at Raymond James at St. Petersburg in Florida.

"It shows that we are still battling some headwinds here, but the economy is definitely in a recovery mode."

The disappointing data added to concerns stemming from Moody's Investors Service downgrade on Monday of credit ratings on six euro-zone countries.

The Dow Jones industrial average (.DJI) was down 42.54 points, or 0.33 percent, at 12,831.50. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index (.SPX) fell 6.30 points, or 0.47 percent, at 1,345.47. The Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC) was down 12.93 points, or 0.44 percent, at 2,918.46.

On Monday, the S&P 500 rose near a seven-month high, up more than 25 percent from a low in early October. The benchmark index has encountered strong resistance in the 1,355-1,360 area.

In other data, U.S. business inventories rose 0.4 percent in December, slightly lower than an estimated increase of 0.5 percent in December.

A third report showed import prices rose a touch more than expected in January as petroleum and food rebounded strongly, but underlying inflation pressure from imports remained muted.

Late Monday, Moody's put Britain's Aaa rating in jeopardy for the first time and warned it may cut France and Austria as well. Moody's also downgraded six euro-zone nations, including Spain and Italy.

But data from Germany on Tuesday suggested that Europe's bulwark economy is picking up pace again. The ZEW economic think tank's monthly poll of economic sentiment jumped to 5.4 from minus 21.6 in January, well above the consensus forecast in a Reuters poll of analysts for a rise to minus 12.0.

Apple Inc (AAPL.O) plans to announce a fourth-generation (4G) version of its iPad in the first week of March, a Wall Street Journal report said, citing a person briefed on the matter. Apple shares rose slightly to $503.41 after hitting above the $500 mark for the first time on Monday.

Pressure is real

Still, there?s plenty of societal-based pressure to go around when it comes to romantic love, Harman said.

Contrary to what many people believe, men tend to fall in love faster and fall out of love faster. Harman said it is a fallacy that men aren?t as emotional when it comes to love, but society doesn?t always offer them the support they need to weather the relationship storm. ?Women are socialized to express caring. Men find it more appropriate to express anger,? she said. That leaves men with little room for grieving relationships that don?t work out.

And for those who believe that romantic love equates happiness, Harman offers a cautionary tale.

She said, ?If you are not happy before being married or entering into a relationship, you?re more likely to be unhappy in a marriage.? The professor suggested that a quality relationship should be the goal, not necessarily marriage or parenthood.

Love on the Internet

Making a connection via social media can be an effective route at the beginning of a relationship, Harman said, but with some caveats. Meeting via the Internet can be a positive experience because people are usually more honest and open in their written communications, she said. ?We have been presented success stories of Internet relationships. People are busy. With the Internet, they can expand the number of people they can meet.?

Still, Harman stressed it is essential that those who hope to pursue romantic relationships meet in person to see if physical compatibility actually exists.

Chemistry is real

Speaking of science, even the ?chemistry? that couples feel toward each other is based in physiology. That initial sense of euphoria, racing heart, warmth and sense of anticipation is a natural, physical reaction to sexual attraction. Chocolate can elicit some of those same physiological responses in a body, too, which is likely one reason the candy has become so popularly associated with romance and Valentine?s Day.

Harman said that initial euphoria of a new relationship usually lasts about three months. She said a truer romantic love is a relationship based on trust and commitment and communication. Still, sustaining that romance can mean work. The media, including books, magazines and movies, focus on new love, but there aren?t a lot of cues about what to do once a relationship has formed.

Consider whether you are choosing the right partner, Harman suggested. To maintain relationships, she says making the other person in the relationship feel special is essential.

But everyday actions, not necessary the grand gestures associated with Valentine?s Day, are most important. Keeping things positive rather than dwelling on the negative is effective. She added, ?It takes five or six positive gestures to make up for one negative comment or action.?
