Nonprofit: Feed America's Hungry -- And Their Pets - Pennsylvania ...

POSTED: 8:32 am EST December 25, 2011
UPDATED: 11:06 pm EST December 25, 2011

Food banks across the country kicked into high gear for the holiday season this week in an effort to feed America's hungry. But a few instead homed in on an often overlooked casualty of hard times -- the family pet."It's the forgotten pets that go by the wayside," said Ann King, founder of an Atlanta-based nonprofit group called Save Our Pets Food Bank.Appalled by tales of pet owners compelled to hand over their cats and dogs to shelters, King formed her organization in 2008 in an effort to provide cash-strapped owners a way to keep their canine and feline friends. Each year, between 3 million and 4 million cats and dogs in shelters are euthanized, according to The Humane Society of the United States, a Washington-based animal advocacy group."I've had people say to me, 'I'm down to my last half bag (of pet food) and I don't know what to do,'" King said. "People sometimes just cry because they need help."But King, also the pet food bank's executive director, said that unlike traditional food banks, her group doesn't typically benefit from a resource boost around the holidays."Most people don't think to give to us and funding is a big problem," she said."A lot of the homeless shelters also don't allow pets. So a lot people often just drive up to the local animal control centers and push their dogs out," unable to feed them, she added. Some people, out of work or under-employed, are forced to live in their cars but still refuse to say goodbye to their animal companions, she noted."They don't want to turn their pets over to shelters, because many of the shelters are full and (their pets) will be put to sleep," King said. "People don't realize that pets, they're family too."One such family member is a 12-year-old German shepherd named Giorgio -- a favorite of Nadine Turner's late husband, who died of prostate cancer more than a decade ago."He loved that dog," said Turner, 57, who became homeless earlier this year after moving to Atlanta in search of work. "He's the last link that I have to my husband."Whatever I do, I have to do my best to keep him alive."Turner, a former business owner and insurance broker from Oakland, California, said she lost her business in 2009.Bunking with friends, she was ultimately forced to camp out on a park bench with her dog near a Kroger food market in downtown Atlanta."No shelter would take me and that dog," she said. She eventually turned to King's organization, which paid a week's motel bills, plus Giorgio's food and medicine."I now have a job lined up with another Insurance company," as well a prospective apartment for rent, noted Turner. But she still must find a way to pay a $350 deposit."If I can't, me and Giorgio will be back in front of that Kroger's."Turner's story is not unusual, noted King, whose group currently works with about 500 other food banks nationwide. She also partners with corporations such Del Monte and Mars, as well as the Halo Pet Foundation, headed by comedian and talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres.Since 2008, King's organization has swelled to more than 30 volunteers. And through corporate and private donors, it's shelled out more than a million pounds of pet food, trucking and mailing the donations to thousands of down-on-their-luck families.Nationwide networks, such as Rescue Bank -- with which King is affiliated -- have helped to connect the efforts of like-minded organizations."Rescue Bank is doing for pets what the food bank network has successfully done for people in this country for more than 40 years," said Debra Fair, vice president at Mars Petcare US. "This partnership is the perfect way to give much-needed support to the shelter and rescue communities and change the lives of homeless pets everywhere."

Easier to Get Auto Insurance Quotes Comparison Online | Car ...

Some people have learned the lesson that they have to carefully shop for a car insurance the hard way.? They are the ones who easily fell to the promises and the ads of some auto insurance companies who are just out there to get their money and not to give them quality insurance services. These people are paying more than what they are supposed to so that they could get their vehicles covered. And since you are reading this article right now, you will never make the same mistake.

The trick in choosing the best insurance for your car is to make auto insurance quote comparison. This is pretty easy to do, however a lot of people failed to recognize that they have a lot of options out there. The fact that the market for car insurances is quite saturated right now has pulled the prices down and made the companies make adjustments to their terms in order to attract potential customers. If it is your first time in shopping for auto insurance you should take advantage of this to make sure that you get all of the benefits and the savings that you deserve.

Here are some of the benefits that you get form making car insurance quotes comparison.

  • You get a greater chance of making a smart and well informed decision in buying car insurance.
  • You are ensured to get the best deal that is available in the auto insurance market.
  • You will get to see the other offers of different companies and that would help you buy an insurance that is not just cheap but also of great quality.
  • Avoid paying more than what you are supposed to.

The best way to get these comparisons is by going to websites that actually offer this information to potential auto insurance buyers. All you need to do is to go to your favorite search engine site and then begin your search. It would be best to visit the ones that are on the first pages of the search engine rankings so that you can be sure that you are going to a well-established site. When you are already on the site, all you need to do is to supply some of the information that they need and then you could the quotes that you can compare would be then supplied to you.

Getting car insurance is really important right now so that you could avoid the head aches whenever you get into an accident. But whole you are shopping for one, make sure that you will get all of the information that is essential for you to make a right decision. There is nothing that is more frustrating than paying really high for an insurance coverage and when the time comes that you need it, they make you go through a lot of hassles. So when you are trying to buy auto insurance, make sure that you lay down your options and compare not only their rates but also the terms that they have.

Lugar: Paul not in GOP mainstream

Texas Rep. and presidential candidate Ron Paul is out of line with the mainstream GOP when it comes to foreign policy, Sen. Dick Lugar (R-Ind.) says.

In an interview aired Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union," host Candy Crowley asked Lugar: "Is that a Republican party message?"

?

Replied the ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, "That's one Republican's message." And he?went on to say that Paul's left-of-Obama foreign policy views were not representative of the party.

?

"No, of course not. ?And it's not a message which really a president of the United States could ever afford to extend. In other words, we're a -- a party and a -- a president of leadership, leadership in the world," he said. "We have a fleet that covers all the seas, that, as a matter of fact, makes foreign trade possible, trade of all sorts. ?We're the only country that can go everywhere all over the world, and, therefore, indispensable to our allies as well as to our own interests."

?

"These are very, very important parts of our national strength. And they involve foreign policy. They involve armed forces and a combination of these," Lugar said.

More Than 26,000 U.S. Jobs to Be Created in First-Quarter 2012 as 244 Industrial Plants Begin Operations, an Industrial Info News Alert

SOURCE: Industrial Info Resources

SUGAR LAND, TX--(Marketwire - Dec 23, 2011) - Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas) -- Jobs, or a lack thereof, have been on many people's minds for the entirety of 2011. In the post-recession environment, millions remain out of work, and finding a solution to this situation has been problematic for the highest levels of government. While the unemployment rate has been dropping in recent months, the level of jobs creation has been slow and is not likely to improve in the coming year, given the economic uncertainty facing the United States and the rest of the world.

However, jobs are being created each and every month, in part thanks to new industrial plants beginning operations after construction has been completed. Along those lines, a look ahead at the first quarter of 2012 shows that some 244 industrial plants are scheduled to begin operations in the U.S., creating more than 26,000 much-needed jobs.

Missile mystery: Who owns 69 seized Patriots?

China denied on Friday any link to a batch of 69 Patriot missiles confiscated by Finnish authorities, saying the weapons were destined for South Korea.

"As far as we know these goods were made in Germany and were being sent to South Korea,"? Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin told a daily news briefing. "This is a British ship which left Germany carrying Patriot missiles for South Korea."

Some reports have alleged the missiles were destined for China, but Liu said that was not the case.

"I don't see what connection this boat has with China. We think it odd that some people always link certain things to China. The facts are all very clear," he added.

The surface-to-air missiles were found on Wednesday when authorities searched the cargo ship Thor Liberty in Kotka, southern Finland. They also discovered 150 tons of explosive material called nitroguanidine, which was not stowed properly.

Markku Koskinen, the director of traffic operations at the port of Kotka, said they were deficiently packed in wooden boxes on open pallets and would be moved to metal containers in line with rules on the maritime transport of explosives.

Finnish authorities confiscated the missiles found on the ship and arrested its Ukrainian captain and chief officer on suspicion of trying to transport the missiles via Finland without permission.

"The missiles did not have the appropriate transit papers," Detective Superintendent Timo Virtanen said.

Story: China gives man 9 years in prison for arguing for democracy

Finland requires those seeking to transport defense material via its territory to seek permission. In the past six years there have been 20 cases of defense material being transported without the required documentation with the latest incident appearing to be one of the largest consignments.

A spokesman for Germany's Defense Ministry told The Associated Press on Thursday that the missiles were an official shipment that was fully declared and had all necessary clearings from German authorities. He also said they were being transported to South Korea.

The ship was sailing under an Isle of Man flag and had stopped to load anchor cables on board.

China is subject to an arms embargo by the United States and European Union imposed after the bloody crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrators around Beijing's Tiananmen Square in 1989.

Story: Christmas craze fills China's malls, not churches

American-made Patriot missiles are used to counter threats, including aircraft, tactical ballistic missiles and cruise missiles. They are part of the U.S. Army's weaponry and were extensively used during the 1991 Gulf war.

Manufactured by Raytheon and Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control in Florida, Patriot missiles have been in service in several countries, including Egypt, Germany, Greece, Israel, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan and South Korea.

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Lil Wayne Is Our #3 Top Newsmaker Of 2011

Tha Carter IV release, I Am Still Music Tour and 'MTV Unplugged' highlight Young Money general's year.
By Rob Markman

Lil Wayne
Photo: Getty Images

It's a common misconception that going to jail can make a rapper hot. Other than Tupac, who emerged from his mid-1990s prison bid a bigger star than he was when he went in, most artists struggle to develop post-prison musical dominance: Shyne has yet to capitalize on his almost nine-year bid, Gucci Mane has spent most of the year behind bars, and T.I. is just now starting to put his troubles behind him.

Credit Lil Wayne with beating the odds and becoming one of MTV News' #3 Top Newsmaker of the Year. When you think of the Best Artists of 2011 — Lady Gaga, Adele, Katy Perry, the Throne — none of them had to face what Wayne did.

It was November 4, 2010, when Weezy was released from his eight-month prison bid for attempted gun possession — not much time to prepare for the year to come. Still, when it was all said and done, Wayne's Tha Carter IV dominated charts, and his I Am Still Music Tour — which consisted of 78 shows across Africa, Australia and North America — grossed more than $47 million. Weezy practically lived on the Billboard charts, and Nicki Minaj and Drake, two artists signed to his Young Money record label, left a huge stamp on the past 12 months as well.

Not long after the curtain closed on 2010, fans were anticipating Tha Carter IV. And while it took a little longer than first predicted, Wayne was far from a musical recluse. On January 3, Chris Brown tweeted a link to his now-omnipresent hit "Look at Me Now," and while the spacey smash might have been a winner on its own, Wayne's appearance on the third verse damn-near guaranteed tens of thousands of radio spins.

In March, Tunechi premiered his "Inception"-inspired Carter IV video for "6 Foot 7 Foot" on MTV. A few weeks later, MTV News was there as the YM general opened his I Am Still Music Tour in Rhode Island, and we checked in on him as he eventually took his concert across the world.

Weezy's live show set him apart from the rest of the year's artists. Aside from his own tour, MTV saw Wayne play Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival and Bamboozle, and he even had his own "MTV Unplugged" special in June. Oh yeah, and Tunechi closed out this year's MTV Video Music Awards with a rocked-out stage show.

Then, when the moment of truth finally arrived, Weezy dropped Tha Carter IV on August 29, and fans ate it up — 964,000 of them during its first week on shelves. Of course, we partied with him the night of the album's release.

It's hard to deny a guy who dominated radio with his own singles ("How to Love" and "She Will") as well as with songs he was featured on (Chris Brown's "Look at Me Now," Kelly Rowland's "Motivation" and DJ Khaled's "I'm On One"). It's hard to deny a guy who mixed rap, rock and pop in his 2011 live shows, bringing fans of multiple genres together. And it's hard to deny a guy who guided the careers of both Nicki Minaj and Drake — two superstars in their own right.

There is no science to why Wayne is so successful. Artists like Jay-Z and Kanye West or Katy Perry and Britney Spears come off as far more calculated, while most times, Weezy seemingly wings it. What other MC would wear animal-print jeggings during the VMAs just minutes before his album is released?

Tune doesn't care, though. It's Wayne's world, and we all just live in it. Makes you wonder what would happen if Katy Perry ever gets locked up ...

MTV continues our Best of 2011 coverage by looking back at the biggest pop-culture stories of the year. As we count down the newsmakers that mattered to you most, also check out our Best Artists, Best Songs, Best MTV Live Performances and Best EDM Artists of 2011.

Harrison Ford takes command in 'Ender's Game'

harrison-ford-aug-2011-gi.jpgThe sci-fi novel "Ender's Game" is mostly about a young boy, and the movie adaptation scheduled for 2013 will be as well. But the film has landed a pretty big grown-up star to play opposite the young lead.

Harrison Ford has signed on to play Col. Hyrum Graff in "Ender's Game," Variety reports. The character is the commander of an elite battle school that trains kids to fight an interstellar enemy, and he quickly recognizes the special gifts the title character (Asa Butterfield of "Hugo") possesses.

The cast also includes Abigail Breslin ("New Year's Eve," "Zombieland") as Ender's sister Valentine, Hailee Steinfeld ("True Grit") as a battle school classmate and Ben Kingsley ("Hugo") as a war hero who takes Ender under his wing.

Gavin Hood ("Wolverine") is writing and directing the adaptation of Orson Scott Card's novel. "Ender's Game" is due for release in March 2013.

DNA in a Cup of Water Reveals Lake Denizens

60-Second Science60-Second Science | More Science

Freshwater habitat dwellers can be detected and quantified based on DNA obtained directly from small water samples. Sophie Bushwick reports.

More 60-Second Science

To monitor the biodiversity of a freshwater habitat, you could camp out by the water and count the rare wildlife. Or you could just scoop up a cup of water. A new Dutch study has found that the DNA traces in a small sample of a body of water can reveal the species that live in it. The work is in the journal Molecular Ecology. [Philip Francis Thomsen et al, Monitoring endangered freshwater biodiversity using environmental DNA]

As animals swim through a lake, they leave behind traces of DNA. The more individuals of a particular species, the more DNA of that species will be shed. And be available to be measured.

The researchers tested about 100 European lakes and streams, comparing the DNA evidence to traditional fauna observations. And the small-sample technique enabled them to correctly identify the species and the sizes of their populations.?

Measuring biodiversity is an important part of protecting endangered species. This quick and easy method of snagging a water sample, which can be tested at a lab miles away from the site, could refresh the process of species monitoring.

Iowa Caucus Results to Test Candidates??? Fiscal Staying Power (ContributorNetwork)

ANALYSIS | Finances may be a deciding factor when it comes to staying power after the Jan. 3 Iowa caucus. Maintaining high-budget campaign travel, buying ad air time and being visible to voters does not come cheap. The Washington Post highlights that Republican candidate Mitt Romney has succeeded in securing campaign contributions from at least 42 billionaires. Citing donor rolls and comparing them to Forbes' list of currently identified American billionaires, it is clear that Rick Perry has managed to court 20 of these high rollers, while Jon Huntsman has engaged the support of 12. Notably absent from this list are Michele Bachmann, Ron Paul and Newt Gingrich.

"I'm not looking forward to anything being long and protracted. So I hope it ends rather quickly and we do real well in the beginning of the year," CNN quotes Paul. To shore up financial support, Paul has set the goal of raising $4 million today. The candidate reminds his supporters -- via a Ron Paul 2012 campaign website post -- that on Dec. 16, 2007, which is the actual anniversary of the 1773 Boston Tea Party, his campaign raised $6 million in a short 24 hours. The candidate hopes to repeat this feat and - as of the time I am writing this article - he has already received $1,773,767.56.

Also feeling the financial pinch is Michele Bachmann. Loyal readers remember my pointing out on Yahoo! News that even though Bachmann pulled ahead of the pack in the Aug. 13 Ames Straw Poll, her current New York Times/CBS News Iowa polling numbers place her at only 9 percent, which positions Gingrich, Romney, Paul and Perry in front of her. Perhaps it was the writing on the wall that compelled her spokesman - as quoted by Politico - to assert that "Bachmann is trying to grow an organic base of supporters, and Newt Gingrich is trying to buy off tea party groups. ? Newt Gingrich knows the only way he can get the tea party vote is to buy it."

Not surprisingly, unsubstantiated - and as per ABC News heavily denied - reports of a $20 million donation to a Gingrich super PAC do not sit well with the other candidates or their supporters. Reuters points out that Gingrich has in fact failed to shore up big-name support for his nomination, which is quite the opposite from Romney, who managed to snag the nods of Chris Christie, Tim Pawlenty, and other heavy hitters. Of course, if Gingrich does get the Iowa caucus vote, the resulting political momentum has the potential to bring big donors and endorsers to his campaign. In the same vein, it may create a fiscal dry spell for the other candidates.

Who has the financial staying power to weather low Iowa caucus numbers? Who does not?

Golden Globe Nominations Led By 'The Artist'

Silent black-and-white film earns six nods, while 'The Descendants' and 'The Help' rack up five each.

The stars woke up early Thursday (December 15), hoping to hear their names when the nominations for the 69th annual Golden Globes were announced. Without many front-runners in the major categories, the Globe nominations gave one of the first serious indications of how the Academy Awards will play out in February. "The Artist," with six nominations, and "The Descendants" and "The Help," with five each, cemented their place at the top of the Best Picture race.

"The Artist," the silent, black-and-white tribute to old Hollywood, wowed audiences during the festival circuit and earned the most nods. In addition to its nomination for Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy, both Jean Dujardin and Bérénice Bejo walked away with acting nominations for their mostly silent roles. Writer/director Michel Hazanavicius earned mentions for both of his duties on the film.

The big surprise from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association ended up being "Ides of March," the George Clooney-directed political drama that found mild success with critics but fell behind in the early weeks of awards season. It scored four nominations in all.

Also on the board with four total nominations was "Moneyball," the true-life drama about the changing world of baseball starring Brad Pitt. Pitt earned a nomination for Best Lead Actor - Drama, while co-star Jonah Hill earned a Supporting Actor nod. "Moneyball" also racked up nominations for Best Motion Picture - Drama and for the screenplay written by Steven Zaillian, Aaron Sorkin, and Stan Chervin.

Two of Hollywood's biggest stars repeated with two nominations in major categories. "The Ides of March" co-stars Ryan Gosling and Clooney both doubled up on awards. Gosling snagged leading actor nods in both the drama and comedy categories for "The Ides of March" and "Crazy, Stupid, Love," which surprised by not getting a Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy nomination. Clooney also walked away with two, one for his directing efforts with "The Ides of March" and one for his lead role in "The Descendants."

"Bridesmaids" earned a nomination in the Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy category. Actress (and co-writer) Kristen Wiig scored a nomination for Best Actress - Musical or Comedy, but co-star Melissa McCarthy, the awards favorite from the film, failed to capture the HFPA's attention for Supporting Actress.

A potential awards dark horse, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2" had gained some momentum with an extensive "For Your Consideration" ad campaign, but the HFPA didn't hand out any awards to the blockbuster series' final chapter, as some had predicted.

For television, the biggest story may be the shakeup in both of the Best Series categories. New series dominated both categories, taking up seven of the 10 spots with nominations for "American Horror Story," "Boss," "Game of Thrones," "Homeland," "Enlightened," "Episodes" and "New Girl." "Breaking Bad," a critical favorite, went unrecognized, aside from Bryan Cranston's lead actor nomination. Former awards mainstay "The Office" received no nominations.

Agreement near on $1 trillion spending bill (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Bipartisan agreement is near on a massive $1 trillion-plus year-end spending package and should be reached in time avert a possible government shutdown this weekend, Senate leaders said Thursday.

The optimism came hours after Republicans said they planned to push the legislation through the House with only GOP votes. Overnight, they unveiled details of the bill, which curbs agency budgets but drops many policy provisions sought by GOP conservatives.

Democrats had been holding up the huge bill, seeking leverage in talks on extending payroll tax cuts and unemployment insurance, two pillars of Obama's jobs agenda.

But Thursday morning, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said he had talked to top Senate Democrats who helped write the spending bill and that remaining issues "should be resolvable." He and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., expressed optimism that disputes over that bill and a separate measure extending a payroll tax cut were near an end.

The spending bill contains language to roll back President Barack Obama's loosening of restrictions on the rights of Cuban immigrants to send money to relatives in Cuba or travel to the island to visit them. Earlier this year, the White House promised a veto over the restrictions on travel and gifts, which are supported by many in the GOP-leaning Cuban-American community, a powerful political force in the swing state of Florida.

Release of the legislation came just a couple of hours after the White House issued a statement saying that Obama "continues to have significant concerns about a number of provisions" in the legislation.

White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer called for another stopgap funding bill to buy time for talks on both the spending bill and the payroll tax measure. Funding runs out Friday at midnight.

The underlying bill has bipartisan backing but could encounter turbulence with conservative tea party lawmakers seeking far more significant cuts to government agencies. The measure pays for day-to-day operating budgets of 10 Cabinet departments and programs ranging from border security to flood control to combating AIDS and famine in Africa.

Changes are still possible in the bill before a vote.

On spending, the measure implements this summer's hard-fought budget pact between President Barack Obama and Republican leaders. That deal essentially freezes agency budgets, on average, at levels that were approved back in April for the recently completed budget year.

The bill chips away at the Pentagon budget, foreign aid and environmental spending but boosts funding for veterans programs. The Securities and Exchange Commission, responsible for enforcing new regulations under last year's financial overhaul, won a 10 percent budget increase, even as the tax-collecting IRS absorbs a more than 3 percent cut to its budget.

Popular education initiatives for special-needs children and disadvantaged schools were basically frozen and Obama's cherished "Race to the Top" initiative, which provides grants to better-performing schools, would absorb a more than 20 percent cut.

Environmentalists scored clear wins in stopping virtually every significant GOP initiative to roll back Environmental Protection Agency rules. Most importantly, industry forces seeking to block new greenhouse gas and clean air rules, as well as a new clean water regulation opposed by mountaintop removal mining interests, were denied. But Republicans succeeded in blocking new energy efficiency standards for light bulbs and won delays to a new Labor Department rule requiring a reduction of coal dust responsible for black lung disease.

Drafted behind closed doors, the proposed bill would provide $115 billion for overseas security operations in Afghanistan and Iraq but give the Pentagon just a 1 percent boost in annual spending not directly related to the wars. The Environmental Protection Agency's budget would be cut by 3.5 percent. Foreign aid spending would drop and House lawmakers would absorb a 6 percent cut to their office budgets.

The measure generally consists of relatively small adjustments to thousands of individual programs. Agencies like the Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement will get a boost within the Homeland Security Department, while GOP defense hawks won additional funding to modernize the U.S. nuclear weapons arsenal. The troubled, over-budget, next-generation F-35 fighter plane program would be largely protected.

Social conservatives won a ban on government-funded abortions in Washington, D.C., and restored a longstanding ban on funding for needle exchange programs used to prevent the spread of HIV. But efforts to take away federal funding for Planned Parenthood failed, as expected.

(AP) ? Senate officials say negotiators are close to a deal for a two-month extension of Social Security payroll tax cuts and jobless benefits for the long-term unemployed. Both are due to expire at the end of the year.

The same package is also expected to require the Obama administration to make a speedy decision on the fate of a proposed oil pipeline from Canada to Texas that promises thousands of jobs.

If nailed down, the deal would come up for a vote in the Senate as soon as Saturday.

Majority Republican leaders in the House were not involved in the negotiations.

The developments came after the White House backed away from a veto threat that centered on the pipeline.

Wiz Khalifa Taps Into 'Nerdy Side' For 'Mac & Devin'

'I'm a square in the movie, and I pretty much maintain that squareness,' Wiz tells MTV News of his February film with Snoop Dogg.
By Rob Markman

Wiz Khalifa is a pretty cool guy, right? That's why it's so hard to imagine the Taylor Gang general as a geek, but in his and Snoop Dogg's upcoming film "Mac & Devin Go to High School," the Pittsburgh rapper plays just that.

"I'm super square in the movie," Wiz told MTV News, laughing backstage at his and Snoop's New York concert last week. "I'm a square in the movie, and I pretty much maintain that squareness. I mean, I walk on the wild side, I do some cool things, but I tapped into my nerdy side."

Though the "Mac & Devin" soundtrack hit stores Tuesday, the stoner comedy won't be out until February. According to Wiz, it wasn't difficult for him to turn down his cool for the camera. "That's kind of who I am as a real person too; I was really reserved," Khalifa said about his high school days at Taylor Allderdice High in Pittsburgh. "I was really fall-backish, so I can totally connect with my character Devin in the movie. It was real easy."

Fans got their first real glimpse of Wiz as Devin in the duo's "Young, Wild & Free" video. In the clip, which mixes movie scenes with performance footage, Wiz's character is seen wandering through the school halls looking extremely studious with his shirt buttoned all the way to the top. It was quite the transformation.

"I had to do makeup every day to cover my tattoos. I had to spray my hair to get the blond out, but it was cool. It was an experience, and it was really, really fun to be a novice at acting, be brand-new and then have to learn," Khalifa said. "I watched the movie, and I can actually see myself getting better in the movie."

Outlet shoppers save nearly 30 percent, if ...

By Kara Reinhardt, Cheapism.com

Lured by the promise of luxury goods at discount prices, shoppers spend $22.4 billion at outlet centers, according to a 2010 State of the Industry report by trade publication "Value Retail News." But how much do shoppers save? Recent research on outlet shopping vs. retail by Cheapism.com revealed that consumers can save nearly 30 percent overall by doing their holiday shopping at an outlet mall. Cheapism found individual items for up to 85 percent less than comparable products at a regular retail mall.

Cheapism.com

Coach bags can be 44 percent cheaper at the outlet

The report compares the cost of shopping for a list of potential holiday gifts?? an iPhone case, a wallet, a V-neck sweater, for example ? and a few other things consumers might need for the season, such as holiday outfits for the kids. The total after discounts and before taxes came to $1,240.15, compared with $1,756.62 at retail ? a savings of more than $500, or 29.4 percent, on comparable items. Cheapism also surveyed prices on dozens of additional items. Some of the biggest discounts included a Calphalon open-stock saut? pan for 85 percent off.

Price isn't the only consideration when you're shopping for gifts, however, and often can be misleading. Here are some of Cheapism?s tips for finding the best deals at the outlets:

Know what you?re buying and where it came from. Is that Coach bag a deeply discounted jewel or a made-for-outlet design? Each of the leading brands mentioned in the report is represented by a particular mix of products in its outlet stores. Some items are liquidation merchandise, but others are made specifically for factory stores and some are the same stuff you?d find at retail. Don?t be afraid to ask a salesperson about the origin of an item before you buy.

Pay attention to detail. Made-for-outlet products are sometimes constructed with less expensive material and less embellishment. For example, a red sweater dress from the Gymboree outlet emulated a dress from the previous season?s retail line but was woven from thinner material and lacked pockets and faux-crystal buttons. On the other hand, cosmetic flaws on discounted Dutch ovens at Le Creuset were scarcely noticeable.

Take the list price with a grain of salt. Outlets try to entice shoppers by printing two prices on the tag: the MSRP, or manufacturer?s suggested retail price, and the lower outlet price. Ostensibly this tells you how much you can save off retail, but remember that much of the merchandise some stores carry is made for the outlet and was never sold at retail.

Shop sales and use coupons. Much of the actual savings at outlet malls comes from sales and coupons the stores hand out at the door or offer online. Before discounts, the savings at the outlet mall were closer to 20 percent in Cheapism?s survey.

Retail stores sometimes offer better value. Depending on what you?re looking for, it may not always be worth it to make the trip to the outlet mall. Check Cheapism?s rundown of outlets vs. retail to find out when it pays to shop the outlets.

(AP) ? Ron Santo always kept rooting for the causes dearest to him ? for his Chicago Cubs to win the World Series, for doctors to find a cure for diabetes and for him to reach the Hall of Fame.

On Monday, Cooperstown finally came calling.

The barrel-chested third baseman who clicked his heels in victory was elected to the Hall, overwhelmingly chosen by the Veterans Committee nearly a year to the day after he died hoping for this very honor.

"It's really exciting because so many years that we had parties over to his house in spring training saying this is the year, I'd tell him this is the year you're going in," said Hall of Fame teammate Billy Williams, a member of the voting panel.

"The one thing, of course, is he's not here to enjoy it, but his family will. He long awaited this, and we're all happy. I know I'm happy, his family is happy, the fans of Chicago are happy," he said.

Santo was a nine-time All-Star, hit 342 home runs and won five Gold Gloves. He was a Cubs broadcaster for two decades, beloved by the home crowd for the way he eagerly cheered for his favorite team on the air, hollering "Yes! Yes!" or "All right!" after good plays and groaning "Oh, no!" or "It's bad" when things went wrong.

Shortly after the announcement, Santo's flag ? white with blue pinstripes, plus his name and No. 10 ? was flying from the center pole atop the scoreboard at Wrigley Field.

"There was always kind of a missing piece of the puzzle of Cubs' history," team owner Tom Ricketts said.

Santo breezed in with 15 votes from the 16-member panel that met at baseball's winter meetings. It took 75 percent ? 12 votes ? to get chosen.

"I've got tears in my eyes writing this: congrats to the Santo family on Ron's election to MLB Hall of Fame. A good day to be a Cub fan," tweeted Chicago-area rocker Billy Corgan, frontman for the Smashing Pumpkins.

Santo died Dec. 3, 2010, from complications of bladder cancer at age 70. He had diabetes, which eventually cost him both legs below the knees, and worked tirelessly to raise millions for research into the disease.

Williams was on the line when Santo's widow, Vicki, got the congratulatory phone call.

"Ron has passed, but it was always his dream, to even have this come to him after his passing. It just shows you can't give up," she said during a conference call from Arizona.

"All he said (was) I hope I get in in my lifetime, that's certainly a reasonable request for anybody who gets an honor as special as this one. Unfortunately, it wasn't meant to be," she said. "With his lifetime every disappointment that came along, he was very disappointed."

Said daughter Linda Brown: "I know, even if my dad were here today, he would never reflect on any of the wrongdoings, so to speak. ... There would be no bitterness, it would just be him being happy, and I believe he is."

Santo joined former Cubs teammates Ernie Banks, Ferguson Jenkins and Williams in the Hall. That famed quartet did most everything at the Friendly Confines through the 1960s and early 1970s except bring a World Series to the ivy-covered ballpark.

"With Ernie, myself and Fergie, those players he played with ... to hear this kind of news today that he's inducted in the baseball Hall of Fame is really gratifying because so many times that we talked about it, it's a place he wanted to be," Williams said.

Santo will be inducted into Cooperstown on July 22, along with any players elected by members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America on Jan. 9. Bernie Williams joins Jack Morris, Barry Larkin and others on that ballot.

"This is a great day for baseball and for Cubs fans everywhere," Commissioner Bud Selig said in a statement. "Ron was a staple of the Cubs' experience every single day for decades."

"I always admired Ron's courage and loyalty, and I miss him very much," he said.

Jim Kaat was second with 10 votes, Gil Hodges and Minnie Minoso each drew nine and Tony Oliva got eight on the 10-person Golden Era ballot. Buzzie Bavasi, Ken Boyer, Charlie Finley, Allie Reynolds and Luis Tiant each received under three votes.

Santo never came close to election during his 15 times on the BBWAA ballot, peaking at 43 percent ? far short of the needed 75 percent in his last year of eligibility in 1998.

Santo had gotten closer in previous elections by the Veterans Committee. The panel has been revamped several times in the last decade, aimed at giving a better look at deserving candidates.

Since his final swing in 1974, Santo's numbers on the field never changed. The perception of what he meant to the game did, though.

"From the discussion yesterday, we kind of got in depth," Williams said. "We really, really talked about each individual and some things were brought out, I imagine that wasn't brought out last time, in so far as what he'd done for the game of baseball, the $60 million he raised for (juvenile diabetes research), all the other stuff we knew."

"This was the case of Ron Santo. We talked about it, we had good discussions on it and it happened," he said.

Hall of Fame third baseman Brooks Robinson was also part of the panel that voted on Santo.

"I kept thinking that he would get in then, then, then and finally he got in, but it's a little too late for him to be there," he said.

"He's just a terrific guy, he's baseball through and through, he's done a lot for the game of baseball in his career, and he's been though a lot of hardships physically and he was just a terrific player," he said. "He certainly belongs in the Hall of Fame. A long time coming. No one knows the reason he didn't get in when the writers were voting, but this process we have has been the fairest, I think."

Santo is the 15th third baseman in the Hall, including three from the Negro Leagues. He was a career .277 hitter and hit at least 30 homers every season from 1964-67.

"I think the happy ending was already there, though. He got his statue and this was a little icing on the cake," son Jeff Santo said. "It definitely puts an end to the chapter there, that's for sure, with the Hall of Fame."

Santo made his debut at 20 with the Cubs in 1960 and played his whole career with them until finishing with the crosstown White Sox in 1974.

Like Banks, Santo never got to play in a World Series. They came close in 1969, overtaken in the stretch by a New York Mets team managed by Hodges, the former Brooklyn star first baseman.

That year, Santo liked to jump and click his heels after wins. It was also the season a fateful picture was taken, showing Santo with on a bat on his shoulder in the on-deck circle at Shea Stadium as a black cat scampered past.

"The '69 team was so very, very close, and the joy that they had not only as players, but to the day he passed, and they're still so very close," Vicki Santo said.
